Curriculum - Project Based Education

The program would introduce youth to opportunities in marine and maritime world, to inspire interest that motivates them to excel.

Develop a program that is based on hands-on projects in a non competitive learning environment where youth can experience skills. This would be an introductory program, not a full fledge apprentice program. Having some experience in a variety of skills, students can select and pursue a career in a format that is compatible with their interest and ability.

There are many ways we acquire and adapt knowledge. Students can excel if they understand an adapt what works best for them. Some of the methods that students should consider.

  • Learning with responsibility
  • Learning with projects
  • Learning with hands-on opportunity
  • Non competitive learning environment
  • Self-education
  • Team education
  • Discovery of natural talent
  • Motivation inspires the desire to learn
  • Develop a love to learn
  • Learning how to learn
Projects promote the development of visionary skills. Visionaries are the leaders in our society.
John C. Campbell folk school in Brasstown, NC has a very successful format. Every week they have 3 and 5 day classes with guest instructors for most topics. Instructors are professionals in their field and come to teach for one week or weekend, maybe once a year.
Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout program is based on projects. This achievement has helped them become very productive citizens.
Guest professionals from the maritime industry give classes about their expertise. This could lead to support from the organize they represent. Topics about maritime careers would be popular. The museum represents hundreds.

Competitive education divides and creates social classes of people. There are winners and losers. The winners develop a positive self-esteem while the losers develop a negative self-esteem.

Noncompetitive education unites and brings people together. Students work together to achieve a common goal. With a team spirit, all develop positive self-esteem.

Teenagers are Learning Machines

Every teenager has a burning desire to learn and be an achiever, BUT, not everyone can learn in competitive classroom environments. In a non-competitive learning environment, anyone can excel.

All teenagers, including those who are in conflict with classroom environments, have a strong desire to learn and be an achiever. Many cannot achieve this goal where their natural talents are out of harmony with the system. These students need to be exposed to compatible influences, if not, they will be wooed by negative influences, such as, street gangs, drugs and crime.

On the positive side, many high school dropouts discover their natural talent, develop it and live productive lives. They, like college students, have a burning desire to excel.

There is also a high percentage that simply gives up. The marine program can offer opportunity that will inspire these teenagers.

Just because a student gets "Fs" in every class does not mean they don't want to learn or excel, THEY DO! EVERY TEENAGER DOES! They need to be in a non-competitive learning environment with topics that relate to their interest and natural talent.
