Windy II

This school ship was built in Charleston from 1999 to 2001 by Captain Bob Marthai. He took it to the Great Lakes where their is community support for this type of program. He now has the business up for sale, but would consider bringing it back to Charleston if there was a support base for it. His home is on James Island.

The above photos were taken at Detyens shipyard.

Panama Canal Zone Windjammer

During the late 1970s, Bob Webb was captain of the Canal Zone's tall ship Chief Aptakisic. This was a 60' schooner owned by the Canal Zone Sea Scouts. For Americas 200th birthday in 1976, this ship was sailed to New York with 14 teenagers under the leadership of George Brisbin . Bob was navigator on this voyage.

In 2003, 26 years later, the crew presented George Brisbin and Bob Webb with a token of appreciation.

This was presented by Amanda Tanner McGee, a former crew member at the Canal Zone 2003 reunion in Orlando, Florida.

In 2003, Bob went looking for his 1970s teens and found 40 of them. As a result, there was an internet reunion. They wrote emails of where they are now and a website was set up. It was removed two years later because it contained a lot of personal information. This reunion and the stories of how the windjammer program effected their lives, inspired Bob to launch the Windjammer Institute program.
